Marcus Rashford might actually end up back at Manchester United. That is not a rumor cooked up by a fan blog. That is coming from David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, two reporters who don’t usually fire off signals unless there is real smoke.
Barcelona had a chance to keep him for £26 million. They passed. The deadline to trigger that clause came and went on June 15. Barcelona wanted to either pay half that or get him on another loan. United said no to both. So now Rashford, who spent the 2025-26 season scoring 14 goals and adding 14 assists for a Barcelona team that won La Liga, is back on the market in a weird way.
The U-Turn at Old Trafford
Rashford was frozen out under Ruben Amorim. That was not a secret. He was exiled from the first team and everyone assumed his time at United was done. But Amorim is gone now. Michael Carrick is in charge. And according to Ornstein, United have opened talks with Rashford’s representatives about bringing him back into the fold for preseason training next month.
Ornstein wrote that Rashford is “on course to rejoin the first-team group in pre-season training” and that there is “an openness all around to potential reintegration.” That is a pretty significant shift from where things stood a few months ago.
Romano backed that up, saying United had “direct contact” with Rashford’s camp and that the talks were amicable. He also noted that there is no guarantee Rashford stays long-term. If a bid comes in that makes sense for everyone, it could still happen. But for now, the door is open.
Why Barca Walked Away
Barcelona’s finances are always complicated. They wanted Rashford, but on their terms. United held firm on the £26 million purchase clause. Instead of paying up, Barcelona let the option expire. Rashford is still under contract at United until 2028. He has said he does not want to move to another Premier League club. So the options are limited.
Aston Villa and Bayern Munich have been mentioned as possible landing spots. But neither has made a move that would force United’s hand. And Rashford, according to reports, has not been tempted by any offers that would actually persuade him to leave.
So here we are. A player who was cast out of the squad is now talking about coming back. Carrick wants to work with him. Rashford is open to it. Nothing is final. But the fact that these conversations are even happening tells you how much can change in a few months at a club like Manchester United.
