Manchester United might have just gotten the break they needed in their midfield search. According to reports out of Germany via Sport Witness, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha has told people close to him that he wants to move to Old Trafford this summer instead of Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old Germany international has been on United’s radar for a while. And now it sounds like the feeling is mutual. TEAMtalk has also reported that Nmecha is leaning toward United, though Manchester City is keeping tabs on the situation too. So this isn’t exactly a done deal yet.

Why Nmecha prefers United

Newcastle can offer Premier League football and a growing project. But United brings global reach, a return to Champions League play and a midfield that’s basically begging for someone with Nmecha’s profile. He’s tall, powerful and comfortable on the ball. He can play as a deep-lying No. 6 or push forward as a No. 8. That kind of flexibility is exactly what United needs after a summer already full of uncertainty around several players in the squad.

Nmecha’s performances for Dortmund and the German national team have made him one of the more intriguing midfield options available. And at 25, he’s hitting the prime years of his career. A move now could define his next five or six seasons.

The catch: Dortmund holds the cards

The tricky part is that Nmecha only signed a new contract with Dortmund earlier this year, one that runs through 2030. That gives the Bundesliga club zero incentive to sell cheap. They don’t need to move him. They can wait for the right offer or just keep him.

United can’t afford to overpay just because Newcastle and City are sniffing around. But if Nmecha genuinely wants Old Trafford, that gives United some leverage in negotiations. The club needs midfield depth and control. They need athleticism in the middle of the park. Nmecha brings all of that. The question is whether the fee matches the value.

No agreement has been reached yet. This won’t be an easy deal to pull off. But if the player’s preference holds, United just jumped to the front of the line.
