Manchester United Shuts Down Mason Mount Exit Talk Despite AC Milan’s Reported Interest

Manchester United has made it clear: Mason Mount isn’t going anywhere this summer. That’s the word from Old Trafford, even as chatter out of Italy suggests AC Milan might be sniffing around the midfielder for a cut-rate deal.

According to the Daily Mail, United has informed anyone asking that Mount is not for sale. This comes after reports in Italy floated the idea of Milan making a move worth around £21.5 million. TalkSPORT also picked up the Milan connections, with some wondering if a switch to Serie A could revive Mount’s stalled career.

But United’s position seems rigid. The club expects Mount to stay put, and there’s no sign they’re actively shopping him.

Mount’s time in Manchester hasn’t gone the way anyone drew it up. When he arrived from Chelsea in 2023, United paid an initial £55 million, with add-ons that could push it to £60 million. At the time, he was supposed to be the guy who brought energy, pressing, creativity and some tactical flexibility to the midfield.

Injuries wrecked that plan. Mount has struggled to find any real rhythm and hasn’t locked down a starting spot. That’s why the Milan rumors have legs — especially now that his value is being discussed at a fraction of what United paid.

Why United isn’t pulling the trigger

Selling Mount for roughly £21.5 million would feel like admitting defeat at a huge loss before he’s had a real chance to prove himself. And that’s before you consider the bigger picture.

United is already reshaping their midfield and attacking options. Mount can play as a No. 8, a No. 10 or out wide. That versatility could come in handy over a long season, especially when injuries hit and rotation becomes critical.

There’s no doubt Mount needs a big season. He has to stay healthy, play consistently and show why United invested so heavily in him. But cutting bait now doesn’t solve much, particularly when the squad already needs more midfield depth.

If Milan came with a much bigger offer, United might have to think about it. At the reported price though, keeping him and hoping he bounces back is the smarter play. Plain and simple.
