Armed Robbery and Kidnapping Charges Just Cost Terrion Arnold His NFL Roster Spot

The Detroit Lions cut cornerback Terrion Arnold on Monday, hours after a Florida judge set his bond at $1 million on felony armed robbery and kidnapping charges. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news, and the team has not commented further on the decision.

Arnold was arrested last week in Florida. According to court documents, he’s accused of forcing a victim into a vehicle at gunpoint and demanding money. The charges are serious enough that the Lions didn’t wait to see how the legal process plays out. They just moved on.

A million-dollar bond and then a pink slip

The bond hearing went about how you’d expect for someone facing this kind of rap. The judge set it high. Arnold’s lawyer argued it was excessive, but the state pointed to the violent nature of the alleged crime. Arnold posted bond and walked out, but by the time he got to his phone, he probably already knew his NFL career was on hold.

The Lions drafted Arnold in the fifth round last year out of Alabama. He didn’t play much as a rookie, mostly special teams and a handful of defensive snaps. The team had him listed as a developmental project, but these charges change everything.

What happens next for Arnold and the league

Right now, no team is going to touch him. Not until the legal situation clears up, and maybe not even then. The league’s personal conduct policy gives commissioner Roger Goodell broad authority to suspend players even before a conviction. Arnold could be looking at a lengthy suspension if he gets signed anywhere.

For the Lions, this is just one more headache in a secondary that’s been shaky all season. They were already thin at cornerback. Now they’re down a body and dealing with the PR fallout of having a player accused of violent crimes still on the roster, even briefly.

Arnold has not publicly commented. His attorney told reporters they intend to fight the charges and that there’s more to the story. We’ll see. The court date hasn’t been set yet, but it’ll probably be months before this gets sorted out.

More on this as it develops.
