The Charlotte Hornets are already deep into a roster overhaul. They moved LaMelo Ball to Minnesota and shipped Miles Bridges to Phoenix. But the front office might not be done yet. According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, there’s a real case to be made for Charlotte making a run at Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
O’Connor laid it out pretty plainly. Brown would give the Hornets something they don’t have. A legit two-way wing with Finals experience. A guy who just led Boston to 52 wins without Jayson Tatum. He’s big, physical, and can guard multiple positions. That kind of player doesn’t hit the trade market often.
“Brown would change the balance of the roster. He would give Charlotte a true wing scorer with Finals experience, physicality and defensive versatility,” O’Connor wrote. “He just led the Celtics to 52 wins without Jayson Tatum because he’s a floor-raiser with enough star power to alter expectations immediately.”
So what would it cost? That’s where it gets interesting. Charlotte has a stockpile of first-round picks from recent trades. They also have Naz Reid, a big man Boston has reportedly shown interest in before. “If the Celtics are serious about reshaping their roster around Jayson Tatum,” O’Connor said, “Charlotte is one of the few teams that can offer a mix of useful players, salary and draft capital without completely hollowing out its own future.”
The fit in Charlotte
The Hornets are building around Brandon Miller and Kon Kneppel. Coby White just signed a $74 million extension and will be a key piece. Naz Reid is in the mix too, unless he gets shipped out. But the roster still feels like it’s missing that veteran voice. That guy who’s been through the grind. Brown fits that description perfectly.
He’s 27. He’s made All-Star teams. He’s played in the Finals. He’d instantly become the most accomplished player in that locker room. And the Hornets have the assets to actually make it happen without gutting their future. That’s a rare combination for a small-market team trying to jump from rebuild to contender.
Of course, none of this means a deal is actually happening. Trade rumors follow Brown every offseason. The Celtics might not want to move him at all. But O’Connor’s point is straightforward. If Boston does decide to retool around Tatum, Charlotte is one of the few teams that could realistically pull off the phone call.
The Hornets made their intentions clear with the Ball and Bridges trades. They’re trying to build something different. Adding a star like Brown would be the loudest signal yet.
