Rio Ferdinand Says Marcus Rashford’s World Cup Performance Deserves a Second Look

Marcus Rashford’s World Cup hasn’t gone the way he probably drew it up. But according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, the stats sheet doesn’t tell the full story.

Rashford got his first start of the tournament against Panama over the weekend, and it was a mixed bag. He lost possession 20 times. He didn’t complete a single dribble. England needed goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to grind out a 2-0 win. On paper, it looks like another forgettable outing for a guy who’s been fighting for relevance at club level.

But Ferdinand pushed back on that narrative during his podcast. He argued that the numbers can be misleading, especially when you’re trying to judge something like energy or intent.

“Sometimes stats can skew the way things are in reality,” Ferdinand said. “You can massage the stats to suit your argument. But if you’re just talking about the eye test with Marcus, his whole energy looks much better. It looks really good. His body language is really positive.”

The former United defender went on to say that Rashford showed promise without being decisive. He got into dangerous areas. He ran in behind. He created one-on-one situations. The final product just wasn’t there, but Ferdinand sees enough to believe Rashford and Bukayo Saka are the guys who can unlock defenses outside of England’s two superstars.

“I think up until the decision-making part at the end of it, he would have been doing everything the manager wanted,” Ferdinand added. “Running in behind, being a threat on the last man, getting to one-vs-one situations. But him and Saka on both sides — it was just the end product that wasn’t there this game. I saw enough to still have belief in those guys to be the ones to really unlock things for us.”

Rashford came into this World Cup after a strong loan spell at Barcelona, where he put up 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 games under Hansi Flick. That stint revived a career that looked dead at Old Trafford. But Barcelona didn’t trigger the €30 million purchase option, and United still wants to sell him this summer. A good World Cup would have helped his market value. So far it’s been more complicated than that.

Harry Maguire said recently that the United squad would welcome Rashford back if he wanted to return. But that door seems pretty well closed. The club wants him gone. He needs a new home. And performances like this one against Panama — promising but not decisive — don’t exactly speed up the process.
