Cam Johnson might be one of the most quietly sought-after players in the league right now. And that doesn’t happen by accident.

The Denver Nuggets forward is coming off a season where he shot 43% from three. That kind of efficiency doesn’t go unnoticed, especially for a 6-foot-8 wing who can play off the ball and create his own look when needed.

According to a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Heat are one of several teams that have checked in on Johnson. The Lakers, Celtics, Clippers, and Magic are also in the mix. Meanwhile, Sam Amick of The Athletic added the Dallas Mavericks to that list, noting that rival teams consistently point to Johnson as the Nuggets player most likely to be moved before next season.

Why Miami makes sense

The Heat just went all-in on Giannis Antetokounmpo. They need shooters around him. Badly. Johnson fits that job description about as cleanly as anyone available.

He’s on an expiring deal worth $23 million. That matters. For Miami, it means they could absorb his salary without wrecking future flexibility. For Denver, it means they might want to move him before he walks for nothing — or before his contract becomes a cap problem.

The Nuggets are trying to get under the second apron. That’s a real constraint. So they might not ask for a king’s ransom. But they also won’t give him away.

What Miami could offer

It’s still unclear what the Heat would put on the table. They don’t have a ton of tradable contracts that match up salary-wise. But they do have draft picks, and teams tend to get creative when they’re chasing a shooter like Johnson.

There are also whispers that Miami wants to sign Mike Conley Jr. or Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency. Both are veterans who could help fill out the rotation. But neither brings the same floor-spacing ceiling that Johnson does from the wing.

Norman Powell is probably gone. The Heat know that. They have to replace his scoring punch without overspending. Johnson gives them a cheaper, more efficient alternative — at least for one season.

The market for Johnson is real. The Heat are one of the teams circling. Whether they land him depends on how aggressive Pat Riley wants to get, and how much Denver values future picks over keeping a knockdown shooter for a playoff run.
