Florida coach Todd Golden is making one thing clear: he’s not going anywhere. Not to Michigan, not to the NBA, not to whatever rumor mill happens to churn his name up next.
Speaking this week, Golden flatly rejected any suggestion he’d be interested in replacing Dusty May, who just left Michigan for the Dallas Mavericks. According to On3, Golden said, “I’m going to enjoy being at Florida for a while.” He added that he and his staff are in a really good spot with the Gators.
And honestly, why wouldn’t he be? Golden already won a national championship at Florida in 2025. The Gators made the tournament again in 2026. The program is humming. He’s got job security, recruits, and a fan base that loves him. Leaving for a rebuilding job in Ann Arbor — even a prestigious one — doesn’t make a lot of sense from where he’s sitting.
Michigan’s coaching situation is a mess right now
Dusty May’s exit was sudden but maybe not surprising. He spent just two seasons with the Wolverines, leading them to a national title in 2026 with a win over UConn. Then he bolted for the Mavericks job days ago. May had previously taken Florida Atlantic to a Final Four, so his stock was high. But he cited the chaos in college athletics — the transfer portal, NIL uncertainty, the whole system wobbling — as reasons for leaving.
Michigan president Domenico Grasso didn’t sugarcoat it. “His departure, however, is a bellwether for college athletics,” Grasso said, per 247 Sports. “Coach May told me that among his reasons for leaving were uncertainties and pressures involving the Transfer Portal and NIL support for student athletes. He and I agree that the future of college sports is heading in the wrong direction.”
That’s pretty blunt from a university president. And it explains why Michigan isn’t exactly a dream destination right now. The Wolverines have handed the reins to Mike Boynton Jr. as interim coach. Boynton previously coached at Oklahoma State, where he had some up-and-down seasons. He’s reportedly being considered for the full-time gig, but nobody’s rushing to call it a done deal.
Meanwhile, Golden’s name also floated as a possible NBA candidate. He’s young, successful, and coaching at a high level. But for now, he’s saying all the right things about staying put. Whether that holds through next season is another story.
The coaching carousel keeps spinning. Golden is firmly off it. For now.
