Ruben Amorim’s Milan Reunion with a Former United Teammate Could Be Close

Ruben Amorim has been at AC Milan for about a month and he’s already reshaping the roster. The former Manchester United boss landed Goncalo Ramos from PSG in a club-record deal. Now, according to reports out of Italy, he might be bringing in another familiar face from his Old Trafford days.

Mason Mount has been offered to Milan, per Milanpress.it. The England international is valued at roughly £21.5 million, though sources close to the situation believe that number could drop in negotiations. Amorim has reportedly given the green light to open talks with United.

Mount’s time at United never really clicked. He arrived from Chelsea with a reputation as a reliable two-way midfielder, but injuries and a lack of a defined role under both Erik ten Hag and Amorim left him on the periphery. Now under Michael Carrick, Mount apparently doesn’t see himself as part of the long-term plan. He hasn’t been able to push Bruno Fernandes for the creative midfield spot, and his defensive limitations make him a tough fit alongside Kobbie Mainoo in a double pivot.

At 27, Mount still has plenty of good years ahead, and Milan might be the perfect place to revive his career. Playing behind Ramos and alongside Christian Pulisic in a new-look attacking unit sounds like a decent bet for all parties. Amorim famously praised Mount early in his United tenure, calling him “perfect” for his system and saying, “I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad, and this is the most important thing for me.”

Funny how things work out. Amorim never got the system to function at United, and Mount kept dealing with fitness issues. Now they might reunite in Italy with a fresh start.

For United, this is a straightforward calculation. Mount is one of the higher earners at the club, and offloading his wages while bringing in a transfer fee makes sense for a team trying to overhaul its midfield. He’s not going to supplant Fernandes and he doesn’t bring the physicality or defensive instincts to play a deeper role consistently. Cash in and move on.

Milan still need to sort out Manuel Ugarte’s situation. The midfielder suffered a serious injury during the World Cup, and that could push the club to prioritize a Mount deal instead. Negotiations are reportedly in the early stages, but with Amorim’s approval already locked in, it’s a move worth watching.
