Manchester United Scouts Track Uruguay’s Maxi Aavjo at World Cup. Here’s What They Saw.

Manchester United sent scouts to watch Uruguay face Cape Verde at the World Cup this week. Their target? Sporting CP left-back Maxi Aavjo, who has quietly become one of the more intriguing defensive options available in the transfer market.

According to reports via SportWitness, United had representatives in the stands for Uruguay’s group-stage match. Aavjo started at left-back and played 72 minutes in a 1-0 win that kept Uruguay’s knockout-stage hopes alive.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan isn’t a household name yet, but European clubs have been paying attention. He was a regular for Sporting last season, logging minutes in the Champions League and earning a reputation as a technically sound defender who can contribute going forward. He’s got two goals and an assist so far in this World Cup, which is solid production for a fullback operating in a system that doesn’t always push him high.

Why United Needs a Left Back

Luke Shaw turns 31 next month. He’s been dealing with injuries more often than not over the last couple years, and United’s depth at the position is thin. Tyrell Malacia hasn’t fully locked down the backup role, and the club has been quietly weighing options for a long-term replacement. Aavjo fits the profile: experienced, in his prime, comfortable defending in transition and capable of playing out from the back.

The Price Problem

Aavjo’s release clause is set at €80 million. That’s a lot of money for a left-back, even one who played well in Portugal and showed up at the World Cup. United almost certainly won’t trigger that clause. The question is whether Sporting will negotiate down to a number that makes sense for a Premier League club looking to upgrade without blowing up the budget.

Sporting has a history of holding firm on valuations, but they also know the player turns 27 next year and his contract runs through 2028. If Aavjo wants the move and United stays interested, there’s room for a deal somewhere in the €45-55 million range — if both sides are serious.

Chelsea and Tottenham have also been linked with Aavjo. So United isn’t alone in this chase. The competition could push the price up or force a quicker decision after the World Cup ends.

Aavjo himself has not commented publicly on any transfer talk. But playing in England, especially for a club like Manchester United, would be a clear step up from the Primeira Liga. He’s at the peak of his career. If he wants a new challenge, this summer might be the time to take it.
