Mason Mount is already logging extra reps before Manchester United’s official preseason even starts. And he’s doing it with a guy who used to work for Liverpool.
The 27-year-old midfielder posted videos on Instagram of himself training in Spain with Dr. Tom King, a performance coach who spent years as Liverpool’s first-team fitness coach. King now runs his own outfit called King Performance Ideology and holds a PhD in Applied Sports Science. He’s worked with elite athletes across multiple sports, but seeing a Manchester United player link up with a former Liverpool staffer is the kind of detail that gets noticed.
Mount’s United Career So Far Has Been a Frustrating Mess
Mount arrived at Old Trafford in 2023 after winning the Champions League with Chelsea and becoming a regular for England. The move made sense on paper. But three seasons in, he’s played only 72 matches for United and scored seven goals. The biggest problem hasn’t been his ability — when he’s on the pitch, he looks composed and smart — it’s that he can’t stay on the pitch.
Injuries have wrecked his rhythm. He’s missed chunks of time every season since joining. And at 27, he’s running out of runway to prove he was worth the investment.
He’s Not the Only One Working Early
United’s preseason officially kicks off July 9 at Carrington, but several players have shown up early. Leny Yoro was already spotted putting in work. Mount went a step further by flying to Spain with a specialist to get a head start on conditioning, gym work, and sharpening his shooting and passing technique.
The videos show a mix of sprint drills, weight work, and technical reps. It’s the kind of detail-oriented training that suggests Mount is serious about finally staying healthy for a full season.
Flexibility Will Be Key Under Michael Carrick
Mount has already said he’s willing to play multiple roles for manager Michael Carrick. That kind of versatility matters because United has a brutal schedule coming up — four competitions including the Champions League. They’ll need guys who can shift positions without losing effectiveness.
If Mount can actually stay on the field, he could be the kind of utility player that Carrick leans on heavily. But that’s a big if at this point. The talent has never been the question. It’s whether his body will cooperate.
The videos from Spain suggest he’s doing everything he can to make sure it does.
