Jose Alvarado isn’t going anywhere. The Knicks and the feisty guard have agreed to a three-year deal worth north of $14 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Alvarado was set to make $4.5 million next season on a player option, but he’s opting out of that to sign the new contract and stay in New York.
This move comes just weeks after the Knicks finished a championship run that nobody saw coming at the start of the season. Alvarado was a huge part of that. Acquired from the Pelicans at the February trade deadline, he brought that trademark pressure defense and the kind of emotional energy that turns home crowds into a problem for visiting teams.
The deal makes sense for both sides. Alvarado gets a raise and long-term security. The Knicks keep a rotation piece who fits exactly what Tom Thibodeau wants: relentless defense, smart decision-making, and zero hesitation in big moments. He averaged 9.4 points and 3.8 assists in the playoffs, but his impact goes way beyond the box score.
Leon Rose has been aggressive since taking over as team president, but this feels different. Instead of chasing a big name, he’s locking up a player who already proved he works in this system. There’s something to be said for continuity when you’re trying to defend a title.
Alvarado’s story is wild when you think about it. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech. Spent time on a two-way contract. Now he’s a rotation guard on a championship team with a real contract that changes his life. He earned every dollar of this one.
The Knicks still have work to do this offseason. They’ve got some cap math to figure out with that second apron situation hovering over everything. But locking up Alvarado was probably the easiest decision they’ll make all summer.
New York fans should be happy about this. The guy is a genuine fan favorite already. The moments he’s created in that building — the steals, the celebrations, the way he gets under opponents’ skin — it’s hard to put a price on that. Turns out the price is about $14 million.
