Bruno Fernandes isn’t going anywhere this summer. At least that’s what he’s been telling the people closest to him inside Manchester United’s locker room.
According to talkSPORT, the United captain has informed teammates and personal contacts that he plans to stay at Old Trafford for another year, tamping down speculation that had been building since last summer about a potential move to the Saudi Pro League.
The 31-year-old Portugal international has one year left on his current deal, plus a club option for an additional season. There’s also a €65 million release clause in his contract, but that only applies to clubs outside England. Non-United fans hoping to see him leave won’t find much encouragement in that clause either, because the player himself appears committed to staying.
Why the Saudi Interest Didn’t Bite
Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad all came calling last year. Fernandes was reportedly tempted by Al-Hilal ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup, but in the end he decided that staying at United was the best call for his family and his career. That’s a choice a lot of players have faced lately, with the Saudi league throwing around money like it’s going out of style.
Al-Nassr is still interested. They’d love to reunite him with Cristiano Ronaldo, his former United and Portugal teammate. And there’s a twist here: Portugal boss Roberto Martinez is reportedly in talks to take over at Al-Nassr after the World Cup. If that happens, you can bet the Fernandes talk will heat up again.
But for now? Nothing formal. No meetings. No negotiations. Just a captain telling his guys he’s sticking around.
United officials haven’t panicked either. They’re relaxed about the whole situation, which tells you they’re either confident in his commitment or they’ve already got a backup plan. Maybe both.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has been a machine. 107 goals. 108 assists. 327 appearances. Those are numbers that make you forget about the rough patches.
Last season was vintage Bruno. He led the Premier League with 21 assists, breaking the single-season record that Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne used to share. That’s not just good. That’s all-time company.
So yeah, United wants to keep him. And right now, Bruno Fernandes wants to stay. That’s about as clean as these things get in the transfer window.
