Thomas Tuchel’s England squad is in New Jersey for a World Cup group stage finale against Panama that should be a formality. It’s not. Not really.
Panama is already eliminated. England is almost certainly through. But the difference between finishing first or second in Group F means a drastically different path through the knockout rounds. And Tuchel’s lineup sheet has a few question marks that could complicate things.
Here’s where it gets real.
Top spot is there for the taking
England drew 0-0 with Ghana in Boston. That result left them needing to match Ghana’s result against Croatia to secure first place in the group. Win against Panama and they’re likely facing a third-place team in Atlanta for the round of 32. Lose or draw, and suddenly they’re looking at a second-place bracket that could get ugly fast.
Tuchel has been blunt about wanting a win. He doesn’t want to rely on scoreboard watching or tiebreakers. The message to the team has been clear: take control now.
Reece James is probably out. Rice is a maybe.
Reece James picked up a hamstring issue against Ghana and it’s looking like he’ll miss this one. The team hasn’t confirmed anything officially, but hamstring problems tend to linger and Tuchel isn’t going to risk a key player for a group stage game when the knockout rounds are right there.
Declan Rice limped off in that same match but said afterward he was fine. Fine enough to start? That’s Tuchel’s call. With a packed knockout schedule ahead, there’s an argument for resting Rice even if he’s fit. The squad has depth in midfield. Kalvin Phillips, Conor Gallagher, Jude Bellingham — options exist.
Elliot Anderson had a weird week
The 23-year-old midfielder underwent a medical ahead of a potential transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. That’s a massive career move happening right in the middle of a World Cup. Anderson played through personal tragedy recently — he appeared in a Europa League semifinal the night before his mother’s funeral — so his focus is probably fine. But you have to wonder how much distraction that creates behind the scenes.
Same old problem: breaking down a low block
Panama is going to sit deep. They have nothing to lose and they know England struggled to break down Ghana’s similar setup. The difference this time? Panama showed at the 2018 World Cup that they’re willing to get physical. They gave up two penalties in that 6-1 loss to England, but they also made life uncomfortable.
Tuchel needs quicker ball movement and sharper decision-making in the final third. Against Ghana, England was slow. Predictable. That can’t happen again.
Wing spots are up for grabs
Bukayo Saka is pushing for a start after looking sharp off the bench against Ghana. That probably means Noni Madueke drops out after a quiet game. On the left side, Anthony Gordon has had two underwhelming performances. Marcus Rashford scored as a substitute against Croatia and is making a case. So is Morgan Rogers. So is Eberechi Eze.
Tuchel has options. But he needs someone to take the job and make it theirs.
Panama might be out of tournament. But this game still matters. A lot.
