Cesc Fabregas wanted Trevoh Chalobah at Como, and that idea still has legs. But now Inter Milan might have something to say about it.
Chalobah, the 26-year-old Chelsea academy product, is being linked with a move to Serie A this summer. Como, the ambitious club that just clinched a top-four finish and a Champions League spot under Fabregas, was the first name in the mix. Now according to reports out of Italy, the reigning Serie A champions are exploring the possibility of bringing him to San Siro instead.
Inter need a center-back. Their shopping list includes Udinese’s Oumar Solet, but that deal isn’t close to done. If it falls through, Chalobah is being considered as a primary backup option. For a guy who came up through Chelsea’s system and has spent years bouncing between being a rotation piece and a loan move, this summer could finally be the one where he lands a permanent home.
Why Chalobah Makes Sense for Inter
Chalobah isn’t flashy. He’s not going to light up highlight reels with 40-yard line-breaking passes or last-ditch acrobatic clearances every week. But he’s solid, he’s versatile, and at 26 he’s right in that sweet spot where a club can get three or four good years out of him without worrying about a massive drop-off. Inter’s defense is aging in spots, and adding a Premier League-tested body who can play in a back three or a back four has obvious appeal.
There’s also the financial side of things. Chelsea values him at around £26 million. For a club like Inter, that’s not pocket change but it’s also not a number that scares them off, especially if they can structure the deal with some flexibility. And for Chelsea, selling Chalobah counts as pure profit on the books since he came through the academy. That matters when you’re trying to balance the books and still chase guys like Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.
Chelsea’s Center-Back Shuffle
The Blues are basically holding a clearance sale on central defenders. Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, and Mamadou Sarr are all being floated as potential departures. Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s head coach, wants to bring in at least one new face at the back, and Lacroix is the main target. Moving multiple defenders out makes that easier, both financially and in terms of squad space.
Chalobah has spent his entire professional career with Chelsea or out on loan. He’s a local kid who made it to the first team, which always adds a layer of emotion to these decisions. But the club is clearly in a reset phase, and if a decent offer lands, they’re not likely to block it.
As for Inter, they’re chasing a fifth Scudetto and want to make some noise in the Champions League again. Adding depth that can actually play meaningful minutes is a priority. Whether that ends up being Solet, Chalobah, or someone else entirely, expect them to make a move before the window closes.
Como might still try to push back. Fabregas knows Chalobah from their time together at Chelsea and clearly rates him. But when Inter picks up the phone, it changes the conversation.
