A New York Knicks-themed trash can has returned to its rightful place after a wild detour through someone’s personal collection. And the NYC Sanitation department is thrilled about it.
The department posted a photo on X showing the bin back outside the commissioner’s office with the caption, “Welcome back! We missed you!” It was a simple moment of victory for a city still buzzing about the Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years.
But how did a trash can become a storyline? Let’s back up.
The woman who took it
Her name is Angie Báez. And she used to work at JPMorgan. That is, until videos surfaced of her walking off with one of the Knicks-themed bins that were available through OnlyNY. The clip made the rounds fast. People recognized her. And then her employer recognized her too.
She lost her job. That part happened pretty quickly.
The New York City Department of Sanitation didn’t hold back, either. They posted a statement saying, “Dumping trash onto the street and stealing public property for your own personal use are both illegal, antisocial behaviors, and not what New Yorkers do.” Straight to the point.
Báez wasn’t charged with a crime. But the public court of opinion had its own verdict.

Fans had thoughts
Social media did what it does. One commenter said, “As a tax payer, I pay the [NYC Sanitation] so she stole from me. She is a thief. Charge her with littering too, as she emptied the trash can full of garbage on the sidewalk.” Another person noticed the irony: “Lost her job and the trash can. Phew.”
Somebody else called the whole thing “tragic.” That one might’ve been sarcastic. Maybe not. Hard to tell anymore.
The bigger picture here
So why does any of this matter? Because New York is still riding high. The Knicks just beat the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals to win their first championship in over half a century. The parade happened on June 18, 2026. Thousands of fans poured into the streets. It was a big deal.
And in the middle of all that celebration, a trash can became a symbol. Stolen, recovered, returned. Welcome home.
