Manchester United Could Hijack Leeds United’s Double Transfer Plans This Summer

Leeds United might be sweating out the next week or two. According to reports out of Leeds Live, Manchester United is circling two players the Whites have been chasing hard this summer: goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. And if the Red Devils get serious, Leeds could end up missing on both.

Let’s start with Darlow. The 35-year-old goalkeeper’s contract at Elland Road expires next week. Leeds has been in talks with him about sticking around, but Manchester United has apparently grown confident they can bring him in to bolster their goalkeeping room. Darlow isn’t exactly a flashy name, but he’s experienced and wouldn’t expect to start. That’s the kind of depth United needs behind whoever ends up between the sticks next season.

Shea Charles is the bigger storyline though

Southampton’s 22-year-old midfielder already saw Leeds put a £20 million offer on the table that got turned down. Leeds is expected to come back with another bid, but now Manchester United’s interest could complicate everything. Charles left Manchester City for Southampton back in 2023, so he’s no stranger to moves involving big clubs. And here’s where it gets interesting: United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was at Southampton when they brought Charles in. That connection might give the Red Devils an edge in negotiations.

Leeds and Southampton are still talking, but no deal is close yet. If United jumps in with a serious offer, Leeds could get priced out or simply lose the player’s preference. Charles is young, versatile in midfield, and would fit the profile of what United has been targeting under their current recruitment team.

Darlow’s situation is more straightforward. He’s a veteran who can sit third on the depth chart or even push for a backup role. At 35, he’s not a long-term investment. But for Leeds, losing him would mean scrambling for a reliable No. 2 or No. 3 keeper late in the window.

Leeds fans have been watching this summer with cautious optimism. The Charles pursuit felt like a statement. But if United takes both targets, it’s a different kind of statement. Not a good one for Daniel Farke’s squad.

Neither club has confirmed anything publicly. Talks are ongoing. But with Darlow’s deadline approaching and Charles facing a potential bidding war, things could move fast from here.
