Haiti and Morocco Just Played the Craziest Half of World Cup Soccer You’ll See All Summer

Atlanta gave us 45 minutes of pure chaos on Wednesday. And honestly? It might be the best half of soccer this World Cup has seen so far.

Haiti, the tournament’s clear underdog, came out swinging. They took the lead twice. Morocco answered both times. The score at the break was 2-2, but the number on the scoreboard barely tells the story.

The opening goal came from a gorgeous team build-up. Lenny Joseph flicked a backheel finish past Yassine Bounou after just ten minutes. Replays showed it was going in anyway, so FIFA credited it as an own goal to Bounou. Doesn’t matter. The move was a thing of beauty and Haiti had the entire stadium buzzing.

Morocco leveled through Achraf Hakimi tapping into an open net after a scrum in the box. Routine finish, but the kind of goal that calms a favorite down. At least for a minute.

Then came the moment that might live beyond this match. Wilson Isidor caught one clean from outside the box and absolutely smoked it. The ball screamed into the top corner. Even Morocco fans in the stands had to acknowledge it. That’s the kind of strike that gets replayed for years, the kind that makes you wonder how a human foot generates that much power.

But Morocco didn’t flinch. Ismael Saibari equalized shortly after, tapping home from close range after another scramble in the box. That goal made Saibari the first African player ever to score in all three group games at a men’s World Cup. Not bad for a guy who just moved to Bayern Munich this summer. Looks like the German giants knew what they were doing.

The second half has a lot to live up to. Both teams pressing for a winner, both defenses looking shaky under pressure. Haiti proved they’re not here to just make up the numbers. Morocco showed why they’re a dangerous side even when they trail.

The crowd in Atlanta was loud throughout. The energy inside the stadium felt like a knockout game, not a group stage match. If you weren’t watching, you missed something special. And there’s still 45 minutes left to go.
