Tottenham Cuts Ahead of Manchester United in Pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes

Tottenham Hotspur has jumped the line in the race for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The North London club is in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old Portuguese international, and they’re doing it by putting together a better financial package than Manchester United.

According to reports, Spurs are negotiating on two fronts at the same time — talking with Fernandes’ representatives and directly with the West Ham board. Manager Roberto De Zerbi wants a midfield upgrade, and the club is moving fast to make that happen.

Fernandes, who initially seemed set on joining Manchester United, is now open to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That’s a shift. And it happened because Spurs came in with a higher overall wage offer and showed more willingness to get close to West Ham’s asking price.

That price is steep. West Ham wants around £85 million for the midfielder they bought from Southampton for £38 million last summer. That’s more than double what they paid, and they feel no pressure to sell cheap.

Why West Ham can afford to play hardball

West Ham got relegated last season. Normally that would weaken a club’s negotiating position. But not here. A £90 million cash injection from shareholders has given the Hammers serious financial breathing room. They don’t need to sell, and they can afford to wait for the right offer.

That changes the math for suitors. Any hope of driving down the price after relegation is gone. West Ham is in a position to dictate terms, and they’re making that clear.

Fernandes’ stock keeps rising

Even as West Ham struggled, Fernandes stood out. His performances attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs — Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal all made inquiries. But it’s Tottenham and Manchester United who have pushed hardest.

United has maintained consistent dialogue with Fernandes’ camp for months. Their recruitment team has done the groundwork. But they’ve been reluctant to get into a bidding war, and now Spurs has stepped in with a stronger offer that’s changed the dynamic.

The question is whether United will match it or walk away. And whether Fernandes, who had his heart set on Old Trafford, is now genuinely ready to call North London home.
