Manchester United aren’t the only team looking at Brian Brobbey this summer. Not even close. According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Red Devils have company from Tottenham, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Juventus, Stuttgart, and Atletico Madrid. That’s six clubs willing to fight for a striker who just finished his first real season in the Premier League.
Brobbey, 24, scored eight goals and added one assist in 33 appearances for Sunderland last season. Not a mind-blowing number, but anyone who watched him knows his game runs deeper than the stat sheet. He’s physical, quick enough to pull apart backlines, and comfortable holding the ball up with defenders hanging off him. That kind of presence is rare.
The Dutch forward is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2029. Sunderland aren’t in a rush to sell, and they don’t have to be. That means any club serious about signing him will have to pay something closer to his real value, not a bargain-bin fee. Man United learned last summer that cutting corners in negotiation usually backfires.
What Brobbey Actually Brings
He finds space in the box better than most. He can create chances for others, not just finish them. And he’s comfortable carrying the ball under pressure, which is a skill that translates immediately into Michael Carrick’s system. The Dutch international already knows the league, which removes the usual adjustment period foreign signings go through.
At 24, his best years are still ahead. That alone makes him a smarter long-term bet than older options who might give United two good seasons before declining. He’d compete directly with Benjamin Sesko for the starting spot, and that kind of internal competition usually raises both players’ levels.
The question isn’t whether Brobbey is good enough. It’s whether United want to get into a bidding war with half a dozen other clubs, including direct Premier League rivals. Carrick’s frontline needs another goal scorer, but the club’s recruitment team has to decide how far they’re willing to push for a player who isn’t yet a proven 20-goal man.
Brobbey scored for the Netherlands in a World Cup group match against Sweden earlier this month. The stage didn’t look too big for him. That matters more than most people give it credit for.
Man United have the money if they want to move quickly. The problem is everyone else knows it too.
