The WNBA isn’t backing down on Caitlin Clark’s latest technical foul. The league decided not to rescind the tech she picked up for clapping during Monday’s game against the Mercury, according to The Athletic’s James Boyd. That decision is likely to sit about as well with Clark as the original call did.

Clark’s fifth tech of the season came in the fourth quarter of a chippy game. She got tangled up with former teammate DeWanna Bonner while defending, fouled her, and both benches cleared. After being separated, Clark clapped toward the Mercury players. Referee Gerda Gatling called it “instigating” and hit Clark with the tech.

Clark Called the Call ‘Ridiculous’

Clark didn’t hold back after the game. “She said that I got a technical for clapping,” Clark said, via Boyd. “So if any technical should be taken away, it should be that one, if it’s truly for clapping. That’s what they said they gave it to me for. It’s just ridiculous. I don’t understand it at all.”

You can see her point. A clap drawing a tech sounds thin. But the league reviewed it and held firm. The Fever plan to appeal, but they haven’t heard back from the WNBA yet.

Why This Matters for Indiana

Under league rules, eight technical fouls trigger an automatic one-game suspension. Clark is now at five, and it’s not even July yet. That’s not panic-button territory, but it’s worth watching. The Fever need her on the floor, and every tech from here on out carries a little more weight.

Coach Stephanie White defended Clark’s competitive edge while also nudging her to be smarter. “There are natural things that happen that the energy of the game creates when you do get those, but there are some that we can be a little bit more in control of,” White said. “So yes, we’ll continue to remind her, and I think she has to have an awareness.”

What’s Next for the Fever

Indiana gets a quick rematch with the Mercury on June 24 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Tipoff is at 7:30 PM ET. The same opponent, the same stakes, and a star point guard who is probably still not over that clap being a tech.
