Tottenham Just Signed a 37-Year-Old Keeper. Here’s Why That Matters for Their Future.

Tottenham moved fast to grab Martin Dubravka on a free transfer this week. The 37-year-old former Newcastle and Manchester United backup just finished up at Burnley. And he’s now the fourth new face through the door under Roberto De Zerbi.

This isn’t just about adding depth. The move tells you pretty clearly what’s happening with the starting job.

Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave this summer. That’s been the word around the club for a while now. And with Dubravka coming in as the veteran backup, Antonin Kinsky is the guy they’re betting on as the new No. 1.

Kinsky had a rough patch back in March. That Atletico Madrid game wasn’t pretty. But he bounced back hard and played a real part in Tottenham clawing their way out of a relegation fight. The club clearly sees something in him.

Dubravka knows his role. He’ll push Kinsky in training and probably get some cup games. But at 37, he’s not walking in expecting to start 30 league matches. He’s here to bring experience and stability to a room that just lost its starter.

De Zerbi’s shopping list keeps growing

Dubravka joins Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke as summer arrivals. That’s four signings already with weeks still left in the window.

The Dubravka deal happened fast. Really fast. The Slovakian international said everything moved quickly and he’s excited for the new chapter. He’s been watching De Zerbi’s teams for years and likes what he sees. Said the style, the vision, the fans — all of it appealed to him.

De Zerbi likes keepers who can play with their feet. That’s a non-negotiable in his system. Dubravka fits that mold. The manager called him a player with big experience and strong mentality who brings balance and leadership.

Spurs also have their eye on West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. With the Hammers going down this season, there’s a fire sale happening. Talks have been positive, sources say, and the price tag is sitting around £85 million. That one could get done if the terms line up.

Dubravka isn’t going to make headlines. He’s not a flashy name. But for a team trying to stabilize after a brutal season and build around a young keeper, he’s a steady hand. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
