Galatasaray’s summer shopping list just got a rewrite. The Turkish champions have officially pulled out of the race for Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, and the reason is pretty straightforward: the math didn’t work.
According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, United wanted around €50 million just to start the conversation. But once you factor in salary, image rights, signing bonuses, and all the other add-ons that come with a player of Fernandes’ caliber, the total package pushed way past what Galatasaray’s front office was willing to spend. And let’s not forget he’s under contract through 2027, so there was no discount coming.
Head coach Okan Buruk had made Fernandes his top target. The guy wanted a creative engine to diversify the attack next season. And you can see why — Fernandes is still one of the best chance-creators in Europe when he’s on. But the board stepped in and hit the brakes. They’re trying to keep the books clean and stay compliant with UEFA’s financial sustainability rules, which don’t exactly love it when you drop huge money on a 31-year-old.
Plan B is younger and way cheaper
So now the focus shifts to Eintracht Frankfurt’s Can Uzun. He’s 20, versatile, and put up 10 goals with 6 assists in 28 appearances last season. That’s not flashy superstar numbers, but the scouting staff is reportedly impressed with how he can play across the frontline. He’s not a direct replacement for Fernandes stylistically, but he fits the profile Galatasaray wants to lean into: younger, resale value, less immediate financial strain.
The club has accelerated talks and is trying to lock this down before the new campaign kicks off. There’s been no official confirmation from either side yet, but the signals are pretty clear. Uzun is the guy now.
It’s a classic pivot. You chase a star, the numbers don’t work, so you go find someone who might become that star in two or three years. Whether Uzun gets there is the question. But Galatasaray’s front office seems comfortable betting he can.
