LeBron James has been called overrated, underrated, and everything in between for the better part of two decades. So when Giannis Antetokounmpo started talking about failure and Michael Jordan after getting traded to Miami, it made sense that LeBron hit the share button.
The Lakers star reposted a clip of Antetokounmpo on his Instagram Stories Monday. In the video, the former Bucks MVP asks whether Jordan’s nine seasons without a title should count as failure. LeBron added his own caption: “Wonderful wisdom here by him!” and wrote that “Failure only exists when you refuse to try.”
It’s a message that hits close to home for LeBron. For years, critics hammered him for his Finals record. They said he couldn’t win without a superteam. They said Jordan never lost in the Finals, like that was some kind of gotcha. LeBron has four rings now, but the noise never fully went away.
Antetokounmpo knows that noise too. He led Milwaukee to a title in 2021 and is one of three players ever to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. But the Bucks struggled the last couple years, and Giannis wanted out. The Heat gave Miami a new superstar, and suddenly the East got a lot more interesting.
What LeBron’s post actually means
This wasn’t just LeBron being nice to a fellow superstar. It was a signal. He’s been the most scrutinized player in the league for years, and Giannis is starting to carry that same weight. When you’re that good, people look for cracks. Giannis’s comments about Jordan reframe the conversation — failure isn’t about losing, it’s about quitting. LeBron clearly agrees.
The timing matters too. Giannis just landed in Miami, and the Heat are suddenly a threat again. LeBron and the Lakers are in the West, so they won’t have to deal with Giannis in the playoffs unless they meet in the Finals. But there’s already chatter about LeBron possibly joining him in South Beach down the road. Insiders say it’s a long shot, but it’s not completely off the table.
For now, LeBron is just backing a guy who thinks about basketball the same way he does. That’s probably enough for Lakers fans to keep an eye on Miami.
