France Manager Didier Deschamps Out of Norway Match After Mother’s Death

Didier Deschamps won’t be on the sideline Friday when France faces Norway in their final World Cup group stage match. The manager is heading home after the death of his mother, a loss that FOX reporter Jenny Taft confirmed Tuesday.

The timing couldn’t be tougher. Both teams are sitting at 2-0 with six points. France holds the edge on goal differential at plus-five, so first place in Group I is on the line. Win the group and you dodge a potential early knockout-round matchup with Brazil. Finish second and that path gets a whole lot harder.

This has to be an emotional one for the French squad. They’ve been in the last two World Cup finals, and they know the stakes. But losing your head coach right before a match that decides your tournament path — that’s something you can’t really prepare for. The team hasn’t said who’ll take over on the touchline, but you can bet the players will want to win this one for Deschamps.

The Golden Boot race adds another layer

All the attention will be on Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, and for good reason. Both have four goals through two games. They’re chasing the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi, who’s also at four. Someone else could sneak in and steal it from those three, but that’s not likely unless France or Argentina get bounced early. History says you need at least seven goals plus an assist or two to win it.

Mbappe and Haaland have the firepower to get there. Both teams are creating chances and their supporting casts are feeding them the ball. Friday’s match is basically a Golden Boot showdown within a bigger group decider.

What this means for the knockout rounds

The winner of Group I draws a third-place team from Groups C, D, F, G, or H in the Round of 32. Win that and you probably face Germany in the Round of 16. That’s a tough road but manageable if you’re France.

Finish second and it’s the second-place team from Group E, then a likely date with Brazil after that. Neither path is easy, but one is much harder. That’s why Friday matters so much, even beyond the emotional weight of playing without your manager.

France and Norway kick off Friday at 3:00 ET / noon PT. Expect a tight one. Expect the emotion to be real. And don’t be surprised if Deschamps’ absence becomes the story that defines how this team responds.
