Southampton just told Leeds thanks but no thanks on a £20 million offer for Shea Charles. And that might be the opening Manchester United needs.
Leeds put the bid in. Southampton said it wasn’t enough. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Saints value the Northern Ireland midfielder “significantly higher” than that number. Talks are still happening, but the bid itself is dead.
United’s midfield rebuild is way bigger than one name
The Red Devils are basically starting over in the middle of the park. Casemiro is already gone — off to Inter Miami. Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow him out the door, and United has reportedly lowered his asking price to speed things up.
They’ve already agreed on a fee with Atalanta for Ederson. They’re also talking to West Ham about Mateus Fernandes. And they’ve got their eyes on Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni.
So Charles is one of several names on the list. But with Leeds stalled and Southampton holding firm on price, United could slide into those talks if they want to.
Who is Shea Charles anyway?
He’s 22. He’s played 76 times for Southampton and scored six goals. Internationally, he’s got 35 caps for Northern Ireland and has worn the captain’s armband a few times. Versatile in midfield, comfortable on the ball, still young enough that his best years are probably ahead of him.
Southampton doesn’t seem eager to let him go cheap. That £20 million bid was a non-starter. Any club that wants him will have to go higher. Maybe significantly higher.
United hasn’t made a move yet. But with a month left in June and a lot of holes to fill, don’t be surprised if they pick up the phone.
