Galatasaray is getting creative. Desperate might be a better word.
The Turkish champions are reportedly planning to hand Victor Osimhen the captain’s armband this summer. The goal is simple: convince their record signing that Istanbul is where he belongs and block Manchester United from coming anywhere near him.
United manager Michael Carrick has Osimhen at the top of a five-man shortlist, according to reports. The Premier League side wants an elite center-forward to pair with Benjamin Šeško and replace Joshua Zirkzee, who seems headed out the door.
There’s just one problem for United. Galatasaray isn’t selling.
The Captaincy Plan
The armband situation hinges on Mauro Icardi. His contract is running down and nobody knows if he stays or goes. If Icardi leaves this summer, the plan is for Osimhen to take over as captain. Lucas Torreira would be vice-captain, with Abdülkerim Bardakcı third in line. That’s the word out of Turkey right now.
It’s a smart play by head coach Okan Buruk and the front office. Make Osimhen feel irreplaceable. Give him status that money alone can’t buy in a transfer negotiation.
Osimhen’s numbers back up why they’d go this far. The 27-year-old scored 15 goals with five assists in 22 Süper Lig matches last season. Across all competitions he had 22 goals and eight assists. That’s the kind of production that makes Premier League clubs start circling.
The Price Tag Problem
Galatasaray paid a club-record fee to bring Osimhen in permanently from Napoli. His current valuation reportedly sits around €150 million. That’s steep enough to scare off most suitors, but Manchester United has never been scared of big money.
Still, the Turkish side is betting that status and symbolism matter more than a bigger paycheck. If Osimhen wears the armband at RAMS Park, he becomes the face of the club. That means something to a player who already dragged the team to a title.
United isn’t the only club tracking him. But they’re the most dangerous one from Galatasaray’s perspective. A club with that much money and that much need for a No. 9 doesn’t give up easily.
For now, Osimhen is in Istanbul. The captaincy might be what keeps him there.
