Felix Nmecha is making himself expensive. That’s the takeaway after Germany’s 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire at the World Cup, and it’s a trend that has Gary Neville talking. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder put together a complete performance that night, and the former Manchester United defender didn’t hold back on his assessment.
“The more he plays like he did the other night, the more expensive he’ll get,” Neville said on ITV. “He looked outstanding. It looked like he had absolutely everything.”
Nmecha, 25, has been linked with a move to Manchester United for a while now. But the club’s priority target according to reports is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. That doesn’t mean Neville isn’t sold on Nmecha as a serious alternative. He clearly is.
Ian Wright echoed a lot of that during the broadcast. “When you look at him, he breaks lines, he gets into the box, he’s got Kimmich to come in and fill in for him,” Wright said. “He can play as a No.8 or No.10, we can see he can finish, you can see why teams are interested in him. He’s got everything.”
What makes Nmecha such a problem for opponents
It’s not just the goals. Nmecha’s game against Côte d’Ivoire was a clinic in timing and versatility. He drifted into channels, picked passes that most midfielders don’t see, and still found time to get into the box and finish. That kind of flexibility is rare. Most players fit one mold. Nmecha fits three or four.
Wright pointed out how Joshua Kimmich covers for him defensively, which lets Nmecha push forward without leaving the team exposed. It’s a smart setup from Julian Nagelsmann, and Nmecha is thriving in it.
United’s midfield puzzle
Manchester United needs midfield help. That’s not news. But the question is whether they go all in on Fernandes or hedge their bets with someone like Nmecha. Fernandes is younger and has Premier League experience. Nmecha is bigger, more physical, and playing the best soccer of his career on the biggest stage.
Dortmund hasn’t put a price tag on him publicly, but Neville’s comment was a warning wrapped in a compliment. Every good game Nmecha has at this tournament adds another few million to his valuation. United isn’t the only club interested either. A few Premier League and Bundesliga sides are monitoring the situation. But United has the pull and the need.
If Nmecha keeps playing like this, the decision might get made for them. Either they pay up or someone else will.
