Timberwolves Lock Up Ayo Dosunmu for $112 Million After Quiet Trade Upgrade

The Minnesota Timberwolves just made their first major move of the offseason and it’s a big one. On Monday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that guard Ayo Dosunmu intends to sign a five-year, $112 million contract to stay with the team. The deal includes a player option in the fifth season.

This isn’t just another free agent signing. It’s a statement. The Wolves made Dosunmu a priority after his postseason performance, and they backed it up with real money.

How They Got Here

Dosunmu originally landed in Minnesota back in February, shipped over from Chicago as part of a three-team trade. In that deal, the Timberwolves sent Julius Randle and their No. 28 pick in this week’s draft to the Brooklyn Nets. They got back the Nets’ No. 33 pick, while the Bulls ended up with Nic Claxton.

It felt like a side move at the time. A lot of people didn’t really know what to make of it. But Dosunmu quickly changed the narrative.

What He Did in Minnesota

In 24 games with the Timberwolves, Dosunmu averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals. Those are solid numbers for a guy who wasn’t even in the starting lineup every night. But the stats don’t really tell the full story. He brought energy and toughness, especially on the defensive end. And when the playoffs hit, he stepped up.

The Timberwolves front office made it clear that locking him in was a top priority. According to Charania, the team viewed Dosunmu as a key piece going forward after seeing what he could do in high-pressure situations.

It’s also worth noting that Dosunmu is just 25 years old. So this contract locks him up through his prime years. That’s smart business for a team that wants to stay competitive in the Western Conference.

What This Means for the Wolves

Minnesota still has work to do. They have the No. 33 pick in the draft, for starters. And there’s always the question of how the roster gels around Anthony Edwards. But adding a guy like Dosunmu — someone who can guard multiple positions, handle the ball and hit big shots — gives them more flexibility.

For Dosunmu, it’s a homecoming of sorts. He went to college at Illinois, which is basically right next door. And now he’s locked in with a team that clearly believes in him.

More details on the contract and the draft will come later this week. But for now, Minnesota fans have a reason to feel good about the direction things are headed.
