ESPN analyst Jay Bilas doesn’t dance around the point. During the network’s special coverage of the 2026 NBA Draft, he called Cameron Boozer the “best pure basketball player” in this class. That kind of praise carries weight, especially from a guy who has been breaking down prospects for years.
“I think he’s the best pure basketball player in the draft,” Bilas said. “But he’s still one of the youngest players in this draft, and he plays with a maturity that’s well beyond his years.”
Boozer spent one season at Duke. He put up numbers that are hard to ignore. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 22.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He shot 55.6% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range. That type of efficiency at his size and usage rate is rare.
What sets Boozer apart
Bilas went deeper on what makes Boozer different from the other prospects. He pointed out something that doesn’t show up on a stat sheet. “The thing that sets him apart to me is his ability to process difficult situations in real time,” Bilas said. He talked about Boozer handling double teams as a pick-and-roll ball handler, his passing, his ability to post up and his perimeter shooting. He even noted that Boozer’s worst game of the year was something like 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. That’s not a slump. That’s just a slightly less dominant night.
Boozer led Duke in scoring, rebounding and assists in the same game 14 times last season. He’s not just a scorer. He creates for others and controls the tempo.
“We talked about safe picks,” Bilas said. “He’s as safe as it gets.”
In a draft where AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson are expected to go 1-2 in some order, Boozer is the wild card who could slide into the top three or maybe higher if a team values certainty over ceiling. He’s not the flashiest athlete in the class, but he might be the most complete player.
Wherever he lands, the team that takes him is getting a guy who already knows how to play winning basketball. That’s a lot more than most teams can say about their draft picks.
