Kylian Mbappe Chases Messi’s World Cup Record After Two-Hour Thunderstorm Delay

PHILADELPHIA — Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France beat Iraq 3-0, but the real story of the night was a two-hour lightning delay that turned a World Cup match into a weather event.

The game stopped at halftime. FIFA officials spotted an incoming thunderstorm and didn’t mess around. Fans cleared the stands for the concourse. Players shuffled into locker rooms. Everyone waited. For two hours.

This was the kind of delay people talked about when North America got the World Cup bid — summer storms in the eastern U.S. are basically a weather lottery — and it finally happened. The Philadelphia Stadium DJ kept things alive during the break. They played bangers. The crowd turned it into a party, which was impressive given the rain came back harder once the game restarted.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half with a curled finish past Iraq keeper Ahmed Fadhil, who was back in the lineup after missing time. That goal held up through the delay and into the second half.

When play finally resumed, the pitch was a mess. Standing water everywhere. Groundsmen were pushing puddles into the dugouts. Both teams warmed up for 15 minutes in a downpour that most Sunday league refs would’ve called off. But they played.

The second half wasn’t pretty early on. Both sides were cautious, feeling out the slick turf. But Mbappe didn’t need long. Fadhil misplayed a simple pass from one of his defenders, gift-wrapping the ball to Ousmane Dembele. Dembele, completely unmarked, squared it to Mbappe for maybe the easiest tap-in of his career. 2-0.

Dembele got one of his own a few minutes later — a driving shot across the goal that made it 3-0. Game over.

Iraq’s World Cup is done. The Lions of Mesopotamia are eliminated. They had moments — they competed in stretches — but France is France. And when Mbappe is on, there’s not much anyone can do.

Mbappe’s brace puts him at 16 World Cup goals, tied with Miroslav Klose’s old record. That mark stood for years. Now it’s just a stepping stone. Lionel Messi set a new record earlier Monday with his brace against Austria, pulling two clear at 18 goals. So Mbappe is chasing Messi now. Two goals back. Still group stage games left. You do the math.

France could’ve had more. Mbappe missed three late chances that would’ve given him a hat trick. Desire Doue and Rayan Cherki came off the bench but didn’t add to the scoreline. Didn’t matter. The win was comfortable. The weather was ridiculous. And Mbappe keeps closing in on history.
