Manchester United’s Dream Striker Has a Price Tag That Might Kill the Deal

Manchester United has a problem up front. Not a crisis exactly, but the kind of gap that keeps a front office up at night. Benjamin Sesko just finished his debut season with 12 goals in 32 appearances across 1,817 minutes. That’s decent for a 22-year-old finding his feet in a new league. But the club believes one more proven number nine could finish what they started in the rebuild.

Victor Osimhen is the name at the top of the list. According to CaughtOffside, he’s the dream target. And it’s easy to see why. The Nigerian striker has 22 goals in 33 games this season and 59 in 74 appearances since joining Galatasaray. He’s a constant problem for defenses, physical and sharp in the box.

But here’s where things get messy. Osimhen’s permanent move to Istanbul in 2025 cost €75 million. That fee underpins his current valuation, and any deal to bring him to Old Trafford would be eye-wateringly expensive. The club is reportedly exploring a five-man shortlist, with cheaper and more flexible options also under consideration.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is reportedly on the list as a practical Premier League option. The Crystal Palace forward has found form this season and wouldn’t require a blockbuster fee. Dusan Vlahovic is being monitored too, with his future at Juventus looking uncertain. Then there’s Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, a young forward viewed as a smart long-term investment rather than an immediate fix.

And then there’s the short-term play. TalkSPORT reports that outgoing Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is being considered as a stopgap. The veteran Polish forward would bring experience and a potential mentorship role for Sesko. It’s not a glamorous move, but it might be the most sensible one.

Sesko is expected to remain the first-choice striker next season, so United doesn’t need a replacement. They need depth and versatility. A proven scorer who can start 15-20 games and change matches off the bench. Osimhen fits that profile perfectly but at a cost that might make the whole thing impractical.

United has a first pre-season friendly against Wrexham on July 18. Formal talks with a preferred target are expected in the coming weeks. The club needs to narrow its options and make a decision. The rebuild is nearly done. One more piece and this puzzle might finally click.
