Mateus Fernandes Picks Between United and Spurs. The Reason Is Clear.

The summer transfer market hasn’t even fully kicked into gear, and already one of the more interesting tugs-of-war is taking shape between Manchester United and Tottenham. Both clubs are chasing West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, and the 21-year-old midfielder has reportedly made up his mind.

According to multiple reports, Fernandes wants United. Badly. The Portuguese youngster sees Old Trafford as his dream move, and sources say he’s pushing his representatives to make it happen. The reason? Champions League football. Fernandes is desperate to play at that level, and United — assuming they qualify — can offer it. Tottenham, at least for now, can’t.

That doesn’t mean Spurs are out of it entirely. Fernandes is settled in London, which gives them a real pull. But as the club fights to avoid another relegation scrap — yes, that’s where Tottenham find themselves in this timeline — the appeal of a United side with European ambitions is hard to beat.

The Jorge Mendes factor

Negotiations are being led by super-agent Jorge Mendes, which means you can expect plenty of conflicting briefings in the coming weeks. The nature of his business is to keep multiple clubs interested, and that’s exactly what’s happening here. West Ham is holding out for around £85 million for Fernandes, a number that has both United and Tottenham hesitating.

Neither club has submitted a formal bid yet. Both are trying to convince the player to choose their project first, hoping to avoid a bidding war. United appears to be winning that battle, in part because Fernandes reportedly wants to play alongside his compatriot Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.

But United’s brass — led by technical director Jason Wilcox — is also playing it cool. They’ve already walked away from one deal this summer (Elliot Anderson) when Nottingham Forest demanded a British record fee. The message is clear: Ineos won’t be held hostage in negotiations.

Financial pressure could shift things

There’s another layer here. A separate report from the Manchester Evening News suggests United believes West Ham may need to sell before June 30 to balance their books and avoid financial fair play trouble. If that’s true, the Hammers’ negotiating position weakens by the day. United might not need to match that £85 million asking price at all if they wait long enough.

Right now, according to sources close to the situation, United officials remain confident they’ll land Fernandes. Tottenham is described as a ‘distant second’ in the race, largely because of the player’s preference. But in a market driven by Mendes and money, nothing is final until the ink dries.

The next few weeks will tell the real story. For now, Fernandes has made his choice. The question is whether the clubs will follow.
