Marcus Rashford to Barcelona Might Actually Happen Again. Here’s Why.

Think Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona chapter is closed? Think again.

The Manchester United forward spent last season on loan at the Camp Nou, put up 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 games, helped Hansi Flick win another LaLiga title, and basically reminded everyone what he looks like when he’s not miserable. Barcelona had a £26 million option to buy him permanently. They didn’t take it. They went out and spent £70 million on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle instead. Done deal, right?

Maybe not.

According to talkSPORT, Rashford is still very much on Barcelona’s radar. And the reason is pretty simple: Raphinha might be leaving.

Raphinha turns 29 this year. He had one spectacular season at Barcelona but has dealt with a string of muscle injuries since. Three or four of them, depending on who’s counting. He picked up another one at the World Cup for Brazil. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian clubs are reportedly circling with a big offer. If that money comes through, Barcelona could flip Raphinha, recoup most of what they spent on Gordon, and suddenly have room for Rashford again.

Spanish football analyst Terry Gibson laid it out on talkSPORT pretty bluntly. He thinks Rashford stays. He thinks Barcelona is trying to work out a cheap loan deal. And he thinks Gordon doesn’t just waltz into the starting lineup.

“Anthony Gordon has got a job on his hands, if they keep Rashford, to be the first-choice player in the first game of the season,” Gibson said. He also noted that England manager Thomas Tuchel now has two legit left-wing options to pick from, which is a nice problem to have.

The bigger question for United

For Manchester United, this is both good news and a headache. Rashford’s stock went up in Spain. His World Cup performance off the bench against Croatia — scoring in a 4-2 win — only helps. But if Barcelona wants another loan rather than a permanent transfer, United has to decide whether that’s worth the risk. A permanent sale would give them clarity and cash for more recruiting. Another loan just kicks a decision down the road.

United supporters might wonder why Barcelona passed on a £26 million buy option if they were really that interested. But clubs change their minds when situations shift. If Raphinha leaves and Barcelona needs an experienced left-sided attacker, Rashford becomes the obvious fit. He’s already proven he can produce in that system. The fans like him. The locker room likes him. That counts for something.

There’s also the Anthony Gordon factor. Gibson suggested Gordon isn’t guaranteed to start ahead of Rashford if both are in the squad. That says a lot about how much respect Rashford earned during his loan stint. He wasn’t just a rotation piece. He mattered.

So here’s where it stands: Barcelona might circle back. United might have more leverage than they did a few months ago. The World Cup is still going. The transfer window is still wide open. And Rashford’s future is still very much in play.
