76ers Add a Knicks Big Man Who Already Has an NBA Title

The Philadelphia 76ers just got bigger. And they did it by pulling a piece from the Knicks’ championship roster.

Ariel Hukporti signed a one-year, $3.4 million deal with Philly, per Shams Charania. The German center spent two seasons in New York after getting drafted 58th overall in 2024. He didn’t exactly stuff the stat sheet last season — 2.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game — but that undersells what he brings.

Hukporti plays with a nonstop motor. He crashes the glass, fights through screens, and doesn’t back down from bigger guys. The Knicks trusted him enough to give him 7.6 minutes a night across 10 playoff games during their title run. That’s not nothing for a late second-round pick who most people forgot about.

Philadelphia’s logic here is pretty straightforward. Joel Embiid is still the man in the middle, and when he’s healthy, he’s one of the five best players on the planet. But he’s almost never fully healthy for a full 82-game grind. Embiid regularly sits the second night of back-to-backs, and he’s missed chunks of nearly every season with some kind of knee or foot issue. The 76ers need someone who can soak up minutes without the offense falling apart.

Hukporti might not be Mitchell Robinson, who was the obvious name on the market this summer. Robinson would’ve been the flashier pickup, sure. But Hukporti costs less and already understands what it takes to win at the highest level. He’s got an NBA Cup ring and a championship ring. That experience matters on a team that’s been bounced early from the playoffs year after year.

The timing works too. Philly’s backcourt is suddenly stacked with Tyrese Maxey and rookie V.J. Edgecombe. They’re going to push the pace and create chaos. But you can’t just run four guards and a wing and expect to win the rebound battle. Hukporti gives them a real body in the paint when Embiid needs a breather.

Is he going to change the franchise? Probably not. But the 76ers didn’t need a savior off the bench. They needed a rotational big who won’t get bullied and doesn’t need plays called for him. Hukporti fits that description.

One other thing worth watching: Hukporti is only 23. He’s shown flashes of developing a mid-range jumper and he’s got soft hands around the rim. If Philly’s player development staff can squeeze a little more out of him, this could look like a steal in a few months. If not, it’s a one-year flier on a guy who already knows what winning looks like. Either way, it’s a low-risk bet on a high-effort player.
