The Phillies have a rotation problem. Aaron Nola has been hit or miss. Chris Painter has been inconsistent. Behind Zack Wheeler, the trust falls off fast. And with the trade deadline closing in on August 3, Philadelphia needs another starter.
Robbie Ray just made himself a more interesting option. The 35-year-old lefty threw six-plus scoreless innings against Atlanta his last time out, striking out eight. That came right after a five-start stretch where he posted a 7.43 ERA. His season numbers — 4.07 ERA, 74 strikeouts in 79.2 innings — are fine but not flashy. The timing of that rebound, though, could make him a target.
Ray is in the final year of a five-year, $115 million deal with the Giants. San Francisco has no qualifying offer option attached to him, which means they get nothing if he walks in free agency. That puts pressure on them to deal him now. And given his recent inconsistency, the asking price has dropped.
What a Fair Deal Looks Like
The Phillies could put together a prospect package without gutting their system. Two right-handed arms from their farm system would make sense for both sides. Ramon Marquez is Philadelphia’s No. 9 prospect, a 20-year-old from Mexico who signed for $10,000 in January 2025. He posted a 1.86 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP in Single-A this season, with 47 strikeouts against 10 walks in 29 innings. He just got promoted to High-A after a five-inning no-hitter in his debut.
Alex McFarlane is the other piece. He’s 24, drafted in the fourth round out of Miami in 2022. His fastball sits in the upper 90s and his slider gets plus grades from evaluators. He had a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings at Double-A before a brief MLB call-up in April. He projects as a high-leverage reliever down the line.
The Fit for Both Sides
For Philadelphia, Ray gives them a dependable fourth starter behind Wheeler. He has playoff experience. He won a Cy Young with Toronto. That kind of veteran presence matters in October, even if his recent numbers don’t scream ace.
For San Francisco, this is about restocking. Ray is a rental on an expiring contract. Marquez could develop into a mid-rotation starter in two or three years. McFarlane might help the Giants bullpen as soon as 2027. That’s real value for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in five years and is probably headed for a larger sell-off.
The Phillies should act fast. Other contenders will call about Ray, and that rebound start against Atlanta erased some of the doubt. One good outing in late July can change the entire conversation.
