Celtics Reportedly Willing to Trade Jaylen Brown in a Giannis Deal. Here’s the Catch.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade chatter isn’t dying down, and it just took a turn that actually means something.

For weeks, the theory has been the same: Miami wants him. Boston wants him. And Milwaukee, if they’re going to move their two-time MVP, wants to do it before the draft so they can actually use those picks. That part hasn’t changed.

But what has changed, according to longtime Bucks reporter Gery Woelfel, is Boston’s willingness to part with Jaylen Brown. And not in a we’ll-think-about-it way. Woelfel reported the Celtics have “intensified their efforts” and are now “more receptive” to moving Brown, even if he wouldn’t land in Milwaukee directly.

That last part is key. The Bucks don’t want Brown. They want picks and young assets, and Brown’s $300 million extension makes him a tough fit for their timeline if they’re hitting reset. So any deal involving Brown would almost certainly require a third team — one willing to send Milwaukee the kind of package that makes losing Antetokounmpo sting a little less.

The problem with trading Jaylen Brown

It’s not that Brown isn’t good. He’s really good. He averaged 23 points a game last season and carried the Celtics for stretches while Jayson Tatum was hurt. The issue is that trading him means Boston is betting everything on Tatum plus some older, expensive role players around him — and hoping that’s enough to get past Miami, Milwaukee (if Giannis stays), and whoever else comes out of the East.

There’s also the simple reality that Brown is 27 and just had his best season. His trade value might never be higher. But the Celtics also know that if they don’t land Giannis, they’ve just broken up a core that went to the Finals two years ago for nothing.

Miami is still the favorite

Nobody is pretending Boston has jumped ahead of Miami. Woelfel’s source put it plainly: “It is generally believed Miami remains the frontrunner.” The Heat have the combination of draft capital, young players (Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic), and expiring contracts that Milwaukee would likely want. They also have the Pat Riley mystique, which seems to matter in these things even if it shouldn’t.

But Miami might need to sweeten their offer too. Other teams around the league know the Heat want this done, and that usually drives the price up.

So where does that leave things? The Celtics are serious. Maybe more serious than they were a week ago. But being serious and actually pulling off a Giannis trade are two different things. The draft is coming up fast, and the Bucks have a decision to make. Boston just made it clear they’re willing to pay whatever it takes. Whether that matters depends on what Miami does next.
