Manchester United Asked for a Road Game to Start the Season and Here’s Why

Manchester United will open the 2026/27 Premier League season away from Old Trafford, and it wasn’t an accident. The club actually asked the league for that schedule. And the reason has nothing to do with tactics or superstition.

It’s about the grass. Specifically, digging it all up and starting over.

According to a report from The Sun, United requested to play their first fixture on the road because ground staff are ripping out the Old Trafford pitch for the first time in 14 years. That’s a big deal for a club that’s taken fire recently for the condition of their playing surface.

So here’s how the start of their season shakes out. United will travel to newly promoted Hull City on August 22. Then they finally get their home opener on August 29 against another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys coming to town. That gives the grounds crew roughly 10 weeks to get the pitch into shape after they tore it up.

Why the pitch became a problem

United’s field has been a quiet headache for a while. Critics have pointed out that the Old Trafford surface sits higher than most Premier League pitches, and there are some awkward brickwork issues near the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. It’s not just cosmetic either. Benjamin Sesko’s injury during a match against Liverpool last month was reportedly made worse when he tumbled off that steeper grade. That kind of thing gets a club’s attention.

This isn’t just about reseeding either. The club is also installing new safety measures while the turf is up. So it’s a full renovation, not a quick patch job.

United haven’t started a league season on the road since 2016, when Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge was at Bournemouth. Last year they hosted eventual champions Arsenal to kick things off. So this is a genuine shift in routine.

The rest of their early schedule? After Ipswich, they get Everton, then Manchester City, then Fulham. A mixed bag. The final three matches of the season have them hosting Leeds United, traveling to Tottenham, and then closing at home against Fulham again.

Nobody is panicking about it yet. But if the pitch isn’t right by late August, you’ll hear about it. United have been here before, just not recently. And with the amount of work going in, the pressure is on to get it right the first time.
