That’s not where a dynasty expects to be. And here’s the hard truth Golden State has to face: Curry turns 39 next season. Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler aren’t getting younger either. Every decision from here on out has to be about winning right now.
That’s what makes the No. 11 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft so important. The Warriors need somebody who can help immediately, not a project who’ll take three years to figure it out. If they’re serious about squeezing one more title out of this core, they should be looking hard at Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg.
Why Lendeborg fits now
Lendeborg is 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan. That’s the kind of length NBA teams dream about. But what really matters for Golden State is that he’s ready to play. He’s got real college experience and a game that’s already polished. He’s not somebody who needs two years in the G League to figure things out.
The Warriors’ defense was a mess last season. They couldn’t switch cleanly. They got bullied by bigger wings. Opponents attacked Curry on defense because there wasn’t enough length or quickness to protect him. Lendeborg changes that immediately. He can guard forwards, switch onto guards, and block shots from the weak side. That’s exactly what this roster is missing.
Steve Kerr’s system needs smart, unselfish players who can read and react. Lendeborg passes really well from the high post and makes good decisions with the ball. That’s not something most guys his size can do right away. Imagine Curry running off screens while Lendeborg reads the defense and finds the open space. That’s the kind of chemistry the Warriors need to rebuild.
Rebounding and pace
Golden State was one of the worst rebounding teams in the league last year. Lendeborg crashes the glass hard on both ends. And he’s not just a stand-around-and-box-out guy. He grabs the board and pushes the ball himself, which is exactly how the Warriors want to play. Fast breaks, early offense, Curry flying around before the defense sets. That’s the formula.
The gamble on experience over upside
Some of the other guys available at No. 11 might have higher ceilings. But the Warriors can’t afford to wait for potential. They need somebody who can survive playoff basketball right now. Lendeborg might not be the flashiest name in the draft. His game is more about consistency than highlights. But championship teams are built on guys who know what they’re doing and do it every night. That’s what Golden State needs more than anything.
The next Warriors title run won’t happen just because Curry is still great. It’ll take smart roster moves and a willingness to bet on proven players instead of long shots. Lendeborg might be the piece that holds it all together for one more run at Banner No. 8.
