Arsenal and Spurs Linked to Mason Greenwood. Manchester United Could Cash In on the Deal.

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood might be on the move again this summer, and his former club Manchester United is paying close attention. According to a report from L’Equipe, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the 24-year-old. AS Roma is also in the mix.

Here’s the part that matters to United’s bottom line: when Greenwood left Old Trafford for Marseille in July 2024 for £27 million, the club inserted a sell-on clause. That clause reportedly entitles United to 40 percent of any future transfer fee. If Greenwood goes for anything close to his current valuation — L’Equipe calls him Marseille’s most valuable player — United could pocket a significant sum without lifting a finger.

The Backstory Nobody’s Ignoring

Greenwood hasn’t played for Manchester United since January 2022. That month he was arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control. The charges were dropped in February 2023, but the fallout never really went away. United loaned him to Getafe for the 2023-24 season, then sold him to Marseille in July 2024.

On the field, the production has been hard to argue with. Greenwood has 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances for Marseille. That kind of output at 24 years old naturally draws attention from big clubs across Europe.

Would a Premier League Return Actually Happen?

A return to England seems unlikely right now, given how his time at United ended and the public scrutiny that would follow. But L’Equipe’s report suggests Premier League interest is real. Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi — who coached Greenwood at Marseille — has gone on record saying the forward has what it takes to win the Ballon d’Or. That’s high praise. But it doesn’t mean a reunion is coming. De Zerbi’s Spurs job is still relatively new, and the club’s transfer strategy has been more measured under his tenure.

Arsenal makes some sense on paper. Mikel Arteta has shown he’s willing to take chances on players with complicated backgrounds if the talent justifies it. And Greenwood fits a profile the Gunners lack: a natural goal-scorer who can play across the front line. But the club has been deliberate about squad culture since Arteta took over. That might complicate things.

For Manchester United, the math is simple. Greenwood is Marseille’s problem now. But if a bidding war materializes between Arsenal, Spurs and Roma, United stands to collect a healthy check. The only question is whether any Premier League club decides the noise is worth the goals.
