Liverpool’s €100 Million Bid for Ivory Coast Teenager Reportedly Rejected by RB Leipzig

Liverpool just got a very public reminder that buying elite teenage talent from the Bundesliga is rarely a simple negotiation. The Reds put together a package worth €100 million to try and pry 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande away from RB Leipzig, but the German club apparently said no thanks.

Multiple reports from Europe, including transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, confirm that the bid landed in Leipzig’s inbox and got rejected outright. The offer was structured as a nine-figure sum for the Ivory Coast international who’s been carving up defenders in the Bundesliga this season and looked sharp in his country’s World Cup opener against Ecuador.

It’s hard to overstate how fast Diomande has risen. He wasn’t even on most casual fans’ radar 18 months ago. Now he’s someone Liverpool is willing to spend nine figures on as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is expected to move on when his contract expires this summer.

New manager, new priorities

This whole pursuit makes more sense when you factor in the change on the Liverpool sideline. Andoni Iraola took over after Arne Slot got fired, and the Spaniard is already reshaping the attack. He added Victor Munoz from Osasuna earlier this week for £34.5 million, hijacking Newcastle’s deal for the Spanish winger in the process.

But Munoz isn’t enough. Iraola wants two new wide players this summer, and Diomande is the crown jewel on that list. The kid can play either wing, has real pace, and at 6’2″ he’s got the frame to handle Premier League defending better than most teenagers making that jump.

Leipzig playing hardball

Here’s where it gets tricky for Liverpool. Leipzig wants more than €100 million. Some sources in Germany suggest the benchmark fee could climb as high as €120 million. The club is also hoping PSG and maybe some other European heavyweights jump into the bidding to drive the price up even further.

David Ornstein reported that Liverpool explicitly told Leipzig they’d pay €100 million. Romano went a step further and said the German club flatly turned it down. That’s a clear message. Leipzig doesn’t need to sell, and they know there’s a market for a 19-year-old with Diomande’s trajectory.

The Athletic is reporting that Liverpool is already exploring backup options in case this gets too expensive. Which is smart, because when Leipzig starts hinting at €120 million and hoping for a bidding war, you need a Plan B ready.

Diomande still has three years left on his contract, so Leipzig holds all the leverage. Liverpool might have to go higher or look elsewhere. Either way, this saga is just getting started.
