Andre Esterhuizen Eyes a Physical Battle Against Barbarians’ ‘Powerhouse’ Center Duo

Andre Esterhuizen isn’t backing down from a fight. The Springboks inside center knows exactly what he’s walking into on Saturday when South Africa faces the Barbarians in what’s essentially a tune-up for next month’s Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Baa-baas are rolling out a midfield that has Esterhuizen’s attention. Munster’s Alex Nankivell, a Maori All Black, teams up with former France star Virimi Vakatawa. That’s not exactly a soft landing for any defense.

Esterhuizen called it a powerhouse pairing and he didn’t mince words. Nankivell is a strong, abrasive runner with good offload skills and distribution. Vakatawa? He’s been around, played at the highest level for France, and he’s a strong ball carrier. The South African center is pumped for the challenge and said he can’t wait for the weekend.

Young Blood in the Springboks Squad

South Africa’s lineup is a mix of veterans and newcomers. Five uncapped players are in the squad: Riley Norton, Carlu Sadie, JJ Kotze, Paul de Villiers, and Vusi Moyo. Norton and Sadie get starts while the other three are set to come off the bench.

Esterhuizen likes what he’s seen from the young guys. He said they bring a different kind of energy and edge. It’s good for them to learn and come through the ranks. But he also pointed out that the older players can learn from the rookies too. There’s some really exciting talent coming through and they need a platform like this to grow from.

The vibe in the camp is solid. Esterhuizen described the group as level-headed, with everyone working hard. There aren’t really seniors or juniors. It’s one squad and everyone is on the same level.

Quan Horn Gets the Start at Fly-Half

The biggest surprise from coach Rassie Erasmus was starting Lions fullback Quan Horn at fly-half. It’s Horn’s first professional start in the number 10 jersey. But Esterhuizen is confident.

He said Horn is a very good player with a lot of skill and a good reading of the game. He’s slotted into the flyhalf position well in training. He’s been working hard and learning on the go. And he has experienced players around him who can help guide him. Esterhuizen thinks Horn will do very well in that position and that will make him a great utility back option going forward.

Saturday’s match at Twickenham should give fans a good look at how this mix of experience and youth meshes before the real Tests start.
