Manchester United Bow Out of Sandro Tonali Race as Tottenham, City and Arsenal Circle

Manchester United have told Newcastle United they are not getting into a bidding war for Sandro Tonali. That much is clear. The club’s internal view, per multiple reports, is that the combination of a near-£100 million transfer fee and the Italian midfielder’s wage demands simply does not fit their financial picture this summer.

So that leaves Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal as the three clubs still in the mix. Tottenham just entered the conversation under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who wants to pair Tonali with the kind of midfield engine he had at Brighton. Spurs are also in talks with City over Brazilian winger Savinho, which could free up some cash if that deal goes through for around £60 million.

City’s interest is real but complicated. Sporting director Hugo Viana has not yet decided whether to formalize a move for Tonali or stay focused on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Anderson is tracking to become Britain’s most expensive transfer this summer, and City’s hierarchy has been careful not to tip their hand. But reports of contact between City representatives and Tonali’s camp suggest the player is open to the Etihad, which could accelerate things.

What Tonali Wants

According to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, early conversations between Newcastle and Tonali’s representatives identified Arsenal and City as the player’s two most preferred destinations. Tottenham’s interest is described as genuine, but Tonali apparently sees north London as a step behind those two. That could matter if De Zerbi’s rebuild doesn’t come with Champions League football attached.

Edwards also reports that Newcastle are braced for a fresh round of bids, with the asking price hovering firmly around the £100 million mark. That valuation reflects how indispensable Tonali has become to Eddie Howe’s system since arriving from AC Milan. He is not a player Newcastle want to lose, but at that price point, every club has a number.

City’s Midfield Dilemma

Incoming Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca will inherit a squad that is shifting at both ends of the pitch. Getting the central midfield right is one of the defining decisions of his first transfer window. Whether that means Tonali, Anderson or both is still an open question. The club is not publicly leaning one way yet, but internal discussions are ongoing.

Newcastle’s stance is firm. They are not lowering the price. And with Manchester United now out of the equation, the race narrows to three. But if Arsenal or City push hard early, Tottenham might find themselves trying to sell a destination that isn’t the player’s first choice.
