Three Free Agent Defensemen Who Could Make Oilers Fans Forget Darnell Nurse

Darnell Nurse wants out of Edmonton. The 30-year-old defenseman formally requested a trade last week, ending a run that spanned nearly a decade with the Oilers. While his $9.25 million cap hit has been a recurring topic of debate among fans, Nurse’s durability and usage tell a different story — he averaged nearly 21 minutes of ice time in 2025-26 and logged more penalty-kill minutes than any other Edmonton blueliner.

The question now is: who steps into those minutes? Oilers beat reporter Zach Laing laid out three free-agent targets the team could pursue when the market opens July 1. All three fill different roles, and each comes with a distinct risk-reward profile.

Jamie Oleksiak: The Size Solution

Oleksiak has been linked to Edmonton before, and it’s not hard to see why. At 6-foot-7 and 252 pounds, the Seattle Kraken defenseman brings a physical presence that’s increasingly rare around the league. He’s not just a big body — his mobility is above average for a player his size, which helps him survive in the modern NHL’s pace-heavy environment.

His production dipped over the last couple seasons, but Oleksiak still profiles as a reliable defensive defenseman who can handle difficult matchups. Across 389 games in Seattle, he posted 21 goals and 89 points while anchoring the penalty kill. According to projections, his next contract could land in the $3 million annual range — a significant discount from Nurse’s cap hit.

Mario Ferraro: The Young Upside Play

If the Oilers want to get younger and potentially get more, Ferraro makes sense. The 26-year-old Sharks defenseman averaged over 21 minutes per game in 2025-26, scoring seven goals and 23 points in 82 contests. He led all San Jose defensemen in shorthanded ice time by a wide margin, a clear signal of his versatility.

The Sharks were a mess as a team, but Ferraro’s underlying numbers suggest he was one of their most effective players. His ability to absorb heavy minutes while contributing on the kill would slot him nicely into Edmonton’s second pairing — and he wouldn’t require the same long-term commitment a trade might demand.

Nick Blankenburg: The Under-the-Radar Contender

Blankenburg is the wild card. The right-shot defenseman split 2025-26 between Nashville and Colorado, finishing with eight goals and 24 points in 61 games. At just 5-foot-9, he doesn’t look the part, but he plays a surprisingly physical game and makes an impact at both ends.

His advanced metrics stand out: according to Laing, his teams controlled over 55 percent of expected goals at five-on-five when he was on the ice. That sort of possession-driving ability is exactly what Edmonton’s blue line has lacked at times. Blankenburg comes with less name recognition, but the numbers suggest he could be a value signing if the Oilers strike out on bigger targets.

Whether the Oilers ultimately fill Nurse’s spot through trade, free agency, or both remains unclear. But with cap relief on the horizon and a clear need on the back end, these three names are worth watching when the market opens.
