How Crysencio Summerville’s Wage Demands Just Cleared the Path for Man United

Manchester United have opened a clear runway to sign Crysencio Summerville after AS Roma pulled out of the race, unable to match the Dutch winger’s salary expectations. According to Corriere dello Sport, Summerville wants roughly €6 million per season after tax — more than triple the €2 million he currently pockets at West Ham. For Roma, that figure was a nonstarter. For United’s INEOS-run front office, it’s a manageable line item.

The 24-year-old remains under contract at West Ham through 2029, with a club option for an additional year. But the Hammers are heading to the Championship, and the pressure to sell this summer is real. Summerville is one of the most valuable trade chips in a squad that needs to shed weight and rebuild.

Why United Came Back to the Wide-Attacker Market

United had initially cooled on left-wing targets after Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu found form under manager Michael Carrick. The club shifted focus to left-back reinforcements, but deals for Nathaniel Brown and Lewis Hall fell through. That pivot stalled, and now the scouting department is back in the wide-forward aisle.

Summerville checks the boxes the analytics staff love: direct, left-footed, capable of cutting inside or playing centrally. He fits a gap in Carrick’s squad that has been open since the window opened.

Roma’s exit leaves United facing no obvious Premier League competition. No rival has lodged a formal bid, and the competitive picture around Summerville has thinned noticeably. That gives United leverage on personal terms, but the transfer fee remains the sticking point.

The £50 Million Question

West Ham paid Leeds United £25 million for Summerville last summer and now want double that. The club is holding firm at £50 million, according to reports. Talk of a joint deal that includes Summerville and teammate Mateus Fernandes — another United target — has circulated, with some outlets floating a package in the £120–130 million range. No formal bid has been submitted.

Summerville’s current salary, reported by Capology at around £45,000 per week, is modest by Premier League standards. His ask of roughly £130,000–135,000 per week sits comfortably within United’s pay structure for a first-team wide player. INEOS should have no trouble agreeing to those terms if the fee can be resolved.

Marcus Rashford’s potential departure this summer could free up both wage space and transfer funds, making the financials even easier to navigate. United have been tracking West Ham’s relegated roster closely, and Summerville may be the most impactful name on that list.

What Comes Next

The real question is whether United will table an opening bid soon or let West Ham’s asking price drag this into a prolonged negotiation that invites other suitors back into the frame. The Hammers’ need to sell isn’t going away, and the continental market can’t match either the fee or the wages United can offer. For now, the road to Summerville runs through Old Trafford.
