Three Unnamed Forwards Earn First Ireland Call-Ups as Farrell Names Nations Championship Squad

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell is rolling the dice on three fresh faces for the upcoming Nations Championship Tests, naming an extended 36-man squad that includes uncapped forwards Billy Bohan, Sam Illo, and Sean Jansen. The Connacht trio will get their first taste of international rugby on a three-match tour that pits Ireland against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand this July.

Farrell’s squad announcement comes on the heels of a second-place finish in this year’s Six Nations, but injury woes have forced some reshuffling. Ten players — including Ryan Baird, Mack Hansen, Calvin Nash, and Andrew Porter — are unavailable for the summer series, opening the door for newcomers to prove themselves on the big stage.

Experience Meets Opportunity

While the rookies add a jolt of energy, the core of the squad remains battle-tested. Caelan Doris will captain the side again, joined by seasoned forwards like Tadhg Beirne, Jack Conan, Tadhg Furlong, and James Ryan. The backline is similarly stable, with Sam Prendergast, Bundee Aki, and Garry Ringrose all making the cut. Notably, James Lowe is absent — he’s set to move to Japan next season, according to team reports.

Farrell emphasized the value of playing Down Under. “The experience of playing in front of largely partisan home crowds will be priceless for us,” he said in the squad announcement. “We are also excited about playing in front of a huge Irish support. Their dedication to the team never ceases to amaze us.”

Early Camp Pays Off

The non-Leinster players — representing the three other provinces — completed a three-day mini-camp at the IRFU High Performance Centre before the squad’s departure on Monday. Farrell said the camp gave the coaching staff a chance to evaluate depth and reward form. “Congratulations to Billy, Sam, and Sean on their selections,” he added. “Each of them has earned the right to be selected after their performances this season.”

The squad now looks ahead to a series that kicks off against Australia, followed by Japan and New Zealand. For the uncapped trio, it’s a shot at making a lasting impression before the final push toward the Nations Championship finals weekend in London.
