The One Move That Could Rescue the Phillies’ Outfield — and It Involves Byron Buxton

The Philadelphia Phillies’ lineup has a slugging problem. Not with Kyle Schwarber or Bryce Harper — those two are doing their part. But beyond them, the bats have gone quiet. As of this writing, the Phillies rank 24th in runs scored, 27th in hits, and 29th in batting average. For a team that spent big to contend, those numbers scream mediocrity. And with a 39-33 record putting them 7.5 games behind the Braves in the NL East, the postseason picture is murky at best.

That’s why whispers are starting to build around a potential blockbuster: a trade for Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies are actively looking to upgrade their outfield. Rosenthal pointed out that even with Brandon Marsh emerging as one of the league’s best hitters, the rest of the outfield has been subpar. “They do need to do something,” Rosenthal noted on Foul Territory. “Dave Dombrowski is someone who routinely goes for moves that he thinks will put his team over the top.”

Why Buxton Fits the Bill

Buxton, 32, is having an MVP-caliber season. He’s slashing .276/.335/.606 with 23 home runs and 13 triples. That home run pace would shatter his previous career-high of 35, set just last season. He’s under contract through 2028, which means the Phillies wouldn’t just be renting a star — they’d be buying long-term stability.

The Twins, however, haven’t shown any indication they’re shopping Buxton. But with the team struggling to find consistency, some league observers believe Minnesota could at least listen to offers. Trading Buxton would net a serious haul of prospects — something a rebuilding franchise might find tempting.

The Phillies’ farm system ranks 20th per MLB.com’s March rankings, which complicates matters. But Philadelphia could get creative. Instead of a standard prospect package, Dombrowski might offer a mix of major-league-ready talent with team control and high-upside minor leaguers. Including a roster player who could help the Twins now might tip the scales.

What’s at Stake for the Phillies

Adding Buxton wouldn’t just patch the outfield — it would transform the entire lineup. Marsh is hitting .324 with an .851 OPS, but beyond him, the outfield picture is grim. Justin Crawford and Edmundo Sosa have struggled, and Adolis Garcia just landed on the injured list. The Phillies rank 10th in total home runs, but that’s mostly a two-man show between Schwarber and Harper.

This trade makes sense on paper. The real question is whether the Twins will actually make Buxton available, and whether the Phillies have enough trade capital to get it done. For now, it’s just speculation — but the kind that could define the deadline.
