One Bar Song, 150 Shows, and a 53-Year Curse: Billy Joel Just Gave James Dolan His Due

Billy Joel has played Madison Square Garden more times than most NBA players have suited up there. So when the Knicks finally ended their 53-year championship drought, the Piano Man didn’t just send a generic congrats. He made it personal.

The “My Life” singer posted a tribute on Instagram that singled out Knicks owner James Dolan — a man who’s taken plenty of heat over the years — and gave him a direct shoutout alongside the team’s historic win.

“Congratulations to the New York Knicks on winning the championship,” Joel wrote. “To James Dolan and the entire organization – you did it! To the players, coaches, and the greatest fans in basketball – this one’s for you New York!”

He included a photo of himself and Dolan posing together, a gesture that carries weight given Joel’s deep ties to the venue. From January 2014 through July 2024, Joel performed a monthly residency at MSG, and his final show marked his 150th concert at the arena. Few people understand what that building means to New York like he does.

The drought is over — and it wasn’t pretty

The Knicks punched through on Saturday, June 13, 2026, beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to claim their first title since 1973. Jalen Brunson put the team on his back with 45 points, willing New York through a brutally slow start. The Knicks managed only 13 points in the first quarter and 37 in the first half, yet somehow trailed by just five at the break.

Then came the second half. New York outscored the Spurs 57-48, clamped down on defense, and held Victor Wembanyama to 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting. Dylan Harper provided a spark off the bench with 25 points in 31 minutes, but Game 5 belonged to Brunson’s grit.

For a franchise that spent decades as a punchline, this win hits different. And for a fan base that packed MSG through lean years, Billy Joel’s salute to Dolan — yes, that Dolan — feels like the kind of full-circle moment only New York could script.
