Ruben Amorim isn’t staying out of work for long. Just months after getting the axe at Manchester United, the Portuguese coach has reportedly agreed to take over at AC Milan, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. The deal is said to run through 2028 with an option for another year.
The move marks a sharp pivot for Amorim, who arrived at Old Trafford with a bold reputation after dominating Portugal with Sporting. But his 3-4-3 system never truly clicked in the Premier League. United showed flashes of life early in the 2025/26 season—an improvement over the disastrous second half of 2024/25—but a fractured relationship with the front office doomed the project before it could fully take shape.
A Chance to Rebuild in Italy
At 41, Amorim still carries the pedigree of a manager who won three straight Portuguese league titles. Milan offers him a stage where tactical discipline is prized and patience—at least relative to England—is sometimes granted. The Rossoneri have cycled through managers in recent years, but the club’s history suggests they’ll give a coach with Amorim’s résumé room to implement his ideas.
His preferred system could actually fare better in Serie A, where three-man defenses are more common and tactical nuance is appreciated. If he can adapt his pressing structure to the slower pace of Italian football, the pieces are there: Milan has young talent in the attack, a midfield that can be reshaped, and a fanbase starving for stability.
What Went Wrong at United
Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United was a study in mismatched expectations. He was hired to modernize the club’s approach, but internal friction—over transfers, playing style, and authority—undermined his authority. Results improved incrementally, but not enough to survive the boardroom turnover that has become standard at Old Trafford. His dismissal after barely a year was less about performance and more about a fundamental lack of alignment.
Now he gets a reset. Milan isn’t a stepping stone; it’s a major brand with European ambitions. Whether Amorim can translate his Sporting success to a second big-league stop will define the next chapter of his career.
