How a Waiver Wire Pickup Stepped In and Led Carolina to the Stanley Cup — While Rooting for the Knicks

Brandon Bussi wasn’t supposed to be here. Not on the ice for the Stanley Cup-clinching game. Not lifting the trophy. And certainly not doing it while also tracking every second of the New York Knicks’ first NBA title in more than 50 years.

But Sunday night in Raleigh, the 27-year-old goaltender completed a storybook season by backstopping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3–0 shutout win over the Vegas Golden Knights. The win gave Carolina its first Stanley Cup since 2006. For Bussi, it capped a rise that started on the waiver wire less than a year ago.

From Waiver Claim to Playoff Hero

Bussi began the season with the Florida Panthers but was waived before ever playing a game for them. The Hurricanes scooped him up, and he quietly put together a dominant regular season: 31 wins, a 2.47 goals-against average, and two shutouts over 39 appearances. He backed up Frederik Andersen through the first three rounds of the playoffs, watching as Andersen carried the load to the Final.

Then Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final happened. Andersen allowed four goals, and coach Rod Brind’Amour made the switch. Bussi took over in net and never looked back, finishing the series with a shutout in the clincher. The move now looks like one of the most underrated waiver claims in recent NHL history, according to analysts and fans online.

A Knicks Fan’s Perfect Weekend

Bussi grew up in Sound Beach, New York, a Knicks fan through and through. So when the Knicks wrapped up their first NBA championship since 1973 just 24 hours before he took the ice for Game 4, his weekend became a double celebration.

“It was so cool to see,” Bussi told reporters, including ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. “So cool for New York.”

He didn’t just win a championship. He watched his hometown team end a five-decade drought, then ended one of his own. The Knicks’ victory added an emotional layer to an already surreal moment for the undrafted netminder.

An Unlikely Path to the Top

Bussi’s route to the NHL was anything but conventional. He played college hockey at Western Michigan University in the NCAA, not exactly a powerhouse pipeline to professional stardom. He went undrafted entirely. His first pro deal came with the Boston Bruins organization, where he bounced around before landing with the Panthers.

But it was in Carolina where everything clicked. The Hurricanes’ system fit his aggressive style, and his teammates quickly trusted him. When the moment came, he delivered. The organization has not confirmed any contract extension talks, but speculation around the league suggests Bussi earned himself a long-term look as Carolina’s goalie of the future.

For one weekend, the Sound Beach kid had it all: a Knickerbocker history lesson and a Cup of his own. The legend of Brandon Bussi is only beginning.
